Album Artifact

Before we get deep in NYCC mode, I wanted to quickly share something new I've been playing around with lately.

Album Artifact is the newest cure for my Music ADD, where I redesign classic album covers in pixel format. Specifically, the challenge is to remake 12" records in a 12x12 pixel grid. I ended up making so many of them from the get go that I'll be posting at least one a day until the end of the year!

I hope that this weird blog becomes a fun trip for music nerds and Nintendo Nostalgics like myself. The albums are chosen randomly from my collection, but I'll try to keep a steady balance of pop culture classics to underground/unknown icons.

Thanks for checking this out! Requests?

  1. To go along with Zappa, how about Trout Mask Replica?
    Neat stuff!

  3. Very odd and cool! I recognize only one of those, but it's fun trying to figure out what/who it is.

  4. From top to bottom, for those curious (spoiler alert):

  5. Stoked to see King Crimson on there! Also more Bowie albums(maybe Low?) are a must. You may not be fans of these, but I would be very curious to see how Pretty Hate Machine and particularly Year Zero from Nine Inch Nails would look. Okay, I know Year Zero is not a "classic", but I think the original album art could look really neat pixelated.

A classic I would also love to see is Talking Head's More Songs About Buildings and Food. Hell, my suggestions might be too complex ha...

And Phillips, good call on Weezer! I feel like such a youngin' but that was the first album I ever owned. I still remember watching the Buddy Holly video on my bro's old Windows 95 over and over.

The blog is a really cool idea! I'll be following it, from my new account "robotenthusiastextreme"... Feel free to hit me up Glyos community! Maybe I'll have more time to write now that I don't have a facebook.

    1. Thanks Michael! NIN and more Bowie are in the queue. More Songs About Buildings And Food was one of the first ones I did (it's hiding among the posts somewhere)! I've seen that actual art piece at the Rock Hall of Fame, and is one of the influences on this whole project. It's a trip to see how big it really is: http://nasher.duke.edu/therecord/img/audio/harrison-on-byrne.jpg

  7. Wow, I'm blind! It's funny too because I actually stopped to examine Darkside of the Moon which was right below it. I love the way it turned out! I recently have been on a huge Talking Heads kick, so it's awesome to see the piece for More Songs. It's probably one of my favorite album covers. Thanks for sharing Marc! Can't wait to see what you have in store for old Trent's brain child.

  8. These are awesome! London Calling is probably my favorite. Power Corruption and Lies by New Order would be at the top of my list to see. Such a classic cover. And Joy Division! And....I'll stop now.

    1. Nope, Signals Calls and Marches wins. And Pink Flag by Wire. I'd love to see that. I guess I didn't stop.

    2. Ha, awesome- New Order and Wire are done and coming this week! Burma are one of my all time favorites - that particular post was reblogged by Matador Records and NPR tumblr... Matt can attest to me jumping out of my seat when I got that notification.

  9. Seriously great job! It's amazing how many are instantly recognizable broken down like that. It's a testament to the original and your recreation.

  10. Crazy, man. There are some absolutely classic albums in the mix, and a couple unexpected favorites, too. (Apollo 18? Hells yes.)

Challenge mode: People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. Not-So-Challenge Mode: Discovery.

  11. Well, it certainly helps to stand about 10 feet back from the computer when you're trying to ID these pieces. :)

  12. Sweet! So many great albums I recognize and then so many more I don't immediately. Nice inclusion of TMBG. I've seen those guys like 15 times back in college.

    How about some Cure?
