The opening on Friday night was easily one of the best toy show experiences in recent memory, with a ton of positive energy and just a great vibe throughout the entire evening. Getting to see Mel Birnkrant surrounded by a crowd of his fans, both young and old, was simply awesome. The man really is a legend, and he lives up to any high expectations that you could ever hold.
Thank you to the 4H and Toy Tokyo for working so hard to put on such a unique and refreshing show, it will go down as one for the ages.
On one last note, the night was sealed with a killer Food Crawl around the East Village, where we all got to catch up and chow down.
We can't wait to do it all again.
PS -The special edition OSM set with Mel's new color selections is a knockout in person. I'm little obsessed with the Inferno, as evidenced above.
I really wish I could have made it, if only to get a hold of that dag on Inferno!
ReplyDeleteI've been carrying the Inferno around. It really came out incredible and has near cosmic special effects that activate under different lighting.
DeleteOh that sounds amazing! Figured out thee set was up on Toy Tokyo's site so I'll get to mess around with that orange beast quite soon
DeleteIt was an awesome event, like you said, it was almost like a Mini-Con (not the transformer). There were so many people I wanted to chat with but it was virtually impossible to cram all that in between 7pm (or 7:40pm in my case as I got lost walking to Toy Tokyo) and 12:30am.
ReplyDeleteAwesome time was had and I still can't believe it went by so fast, and Crif Dogs is amazing. I may have to make hot dogs with bacon on them from now on LoL.
If I was a little more flush with $$$ I'd have bought that special Mel Birnkrant edition set as that inferno IS killer.
I think you stunned Mel with how prolific you are Chris. He was truly interested in your growing body of work.
DeleteOr maybe he just wanted your pizza. Ha!
LoL or I at least stunned him at my ability to pull nearly countless amounts of things out of my backpack. There never seem to be enough hours in the day to sculpt all the things I'd like to. Unless you count that weekend back in December, I think I nearly burnt out my creation matrix with all the stuff I was making LoL.
DeleteAnd that really was damn good pizza, thanks again for that.
It was a great time! I'm sorry I couldn't stick around later, had to get the PG crew back home before we turned into pumpkins. ;)
ReplyDelete-Connor
Somebody has to keep those wild men out of trouble. You have to figure that since you already have the training to deal with suspect characters, you would get the job!
DeleteWas great to see you in the familiar setting.
AMAZING weekend at the show and after!
ReplyDeleteNext time we do this, I will be fully prepared and ready for the FOOD CRAWL!!! What I did experience was phenomenal. My best to you, Marcus, Jesse and the others.
Nate, having you and Iz up for that surprise visit really capped off the whole trip. It's funny that we still forgot to draw together! I'm really looking forward to the next time that we all meet up.
DeletePS -We also have to get you two up to the Tower Of Jesse so you can see the toyopolis that he lives in. Plus, we can eat some Nick's Roast Beef.
Absolutely! I'm hoping for some time this weekend to work on some of the stuff we talked about. :) Crossing fingers and toes!
DeleteIt was a fantastic show! I akwardly interrupted Matt to say hi and thank him for making great toys, and he was so nice that I totally forgot my ulterior motive (begging for more slightly different EMD blocks).
ReplyDeleteEveryone was really nice, it was great to see the customs in person, and free beer! Hoohah!
-Dan
It was great to meet you Dan! The mayhem of activity in that room made it hard for any of us to concentrate! Ha!
DeleteAlternate Blocks, huh? Well some new colors will be on deck in late March that do share some of that same gray color from the EMD style. Think Deep Space Exploration and Rescue themes.
I hope you dig them when they surface.
Thanks for introducing yourself at the show!
Rescue themes?? I can picture a block in white with red & black paint applications, OR a grey block with white & black paint applications. Deep Space Exploration I can't quite put a color on that, maybe....darker colors, like black &/or a dark purple??
DeleteWait a second...deep space exploration blocks....possibly crayboth in the same drop...hmmm... *puts on his Sherlock Holmes hat & puffs his bubble pipe* The game is afoot!
VERY awesome night! The post-show food crawl was fantastic! Thanks so much for including me, boss :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for putting up with our hyper food absorption! It can be pretty horrifying to be part of.
DeleteYour Shinobi heads are looking awesome by the way.
Always a pleasure. Like Connor, I, too, apologize for not being able to stick around for the end of the Crawl, though I don't doubt it would've been a blast. Til next time, space travelers!
ReplyDeleteIt is always a special occasion when we get to cross paths Roy! That Crawl was a good one, with a roster as eclectic as our collective tastes in food.
DeleteThanks for sticking around for as long as you did!
That was an amazing night! I've never hung out wuth that many ppl in one night. Wish we talked more Matt, but I was talking to just about EVERYONE there. Alright back to working on that thing I showed you at the show!
ReplyDeleteit is always great seeing you, jesse and marc and I really wish there were more occasions for it... there are so many places I want to take you to to eat...
ReplyDeleteloved getting to meet Mel, he is a true genius and I can see a lot of him in you. You're both toy masters. I hope to see you guys again soon
(love the hub set, by the way)
Really would have loved to make this show! But I'm loving hearing about it from all of you guys! Glad you all had a blast!
ReplyDeleteSounds like it was an awesome night indeed.
ReplyDeleteDamn, I really, really wish I could have made the trip. One day...
