Inspiration On the Shelves

Things behind the scenes here have been extra busy since 2013 started and the poor old blog has been pretty quiet. I hope when some of these new projects finally roll out over the next few months, you guys will enjoy them!

The next wave of stuff is still on track for the beginning of April, with an assortment about the same size as the last release, but hopefully with something brand new added to the mix.

We've been discussing something new we wanted to do in the store that we wanted to ask you all about. If you're familiar with this blog, then you most likely know the system we currently use to get new figures out every other month, an event that we call a "launch", where a bunch of items are released at one time. The plan is to continue using this method, but to also start stocking something akin to our old Buildstation selection, but with "Standard" versions of our characters. What would you guys think about seeing a fully detailed standard colored Pheyden (light blue-grey), or Standard Argen (metallic silver) in stock at all times? Or would you prefer straight all black or clear colorless, unlimited runs of everything, available year round?

We would love to get your feedback on these potential additions to the store. What would you like to see?

In the interim, I wanted to share a few pics from a shelf up in our attic. This is where all our new sculpts have to be measured, to make sure a true toy feeling is deeply encoded in each figure's DNA.

Plus, I just like staring at it all. This particular shelf gets checked out every single day.

EDIT  You guys are the best! Thank you so much for all the feedback. We're looking at the comments and factoring the information and each of your requests into the new store development. Both a small standard character selection and a solid Buildstation offering year round feels like the right way to go. Gears are already in motion.

Black or clear to start with in the new Buildstation? Or something else?

  1. The question we've all been waiting for, the time may finally be upon us.

Although I LOVE standard Pheyden, I vote for all black or clear colorless, unlimited runs a/k/a the customizer's dream.

    Thanks Matt!

  2. Keeping clear armorvors in stock with unlimited orders would be great. We need to have those available for customs at all times.

  3. I'd go with the light blue/grey and clear Pheydens.

  4. awesome shelf!

I would like to see both the standard and the black/clear year round stock.

I love the standard character colorways and try to collect each one, I also like to have different armored versions of each so multiple of the same traveler is necessary.

From a building customizing view you can never have enough black/clear parts, I'm always running out so I would definitely be happy to see them in store year round.

  5. I'd LOVE to see the Standard Pheyden always available so anyone (old or new) can enjoy him as much as I do!

  6. Love lookin' at those shelves. Awesome.

As echoed above... Black, White, and clears would be best for the build it yourself customizers... Maybe even GitD too.

That's the beauty of your library o' figures and parts, they scream mix 'n' match and customize!

I also love the idea of having a healthy stack of the original schemes for characters available. The standard Pheyden, Exellis, Sarvos, etc. That's a history that should always be remembered and available I would think. I, like many here probably have some of the older standard guys, but with the improvements you've made on the joints, and the quality of the paints and plastics, I'm not opposed to seeing the old guys with some of the newer touches of today on them.

Oh and the Voss clear... Yeah, need an infinite supply of that. :) I can't get enough of that color.

  7. Wow, that looks a lot like my toy box circa 1985 or 86! I see a few of my old favorites in there, as well as a few things that I had forgotten about!

Love the idea of stocking standard versions of figures in standard colorways, but I think I would prefer to see them produced in clear PVC. Would this include all figures like Armorvors, Gobons, Sarvos, etc, or just the few that you mentioned?

Question regarding the store- I have a lot of extra torso/head combos. Have you ever considered selling extra limbs?

Looking forward to news on the next drop, can't wait to find out what's new!

  8. I would love to see Pheyden, Exellis, Argen and other key characters as permanent stock in the store. That would be a great boon for new (and not so new) collectors as it would allow them to collect the main cast without having to pry them from the hands of other collectors. I've often wished that Standard Pheyden was easier to come by these days. Would these be single-color PVC figures, or would they have color-swapped limbs like the original releases?

  9. Please forgive the outburst but ZOMG! Construx Spaceman! The memories are flooding back!

Back on topic, I welcome the return of the buildstation! Having a select few figures in stock all the time would be fantastic!

  10. Great collection. Much love to The Adventure People and Eagle Force.
Pheyden, Exellis, and Argen/Buildman in black, white, grey, and clear would be a dream come true. If I had to settle for one I would say a neutral grey/blue, just one solid color with no detail would be great for customizing. If we could get two options I would say grey/blue and black, again in a single color with no detailing. I hope that something along this line happens beacause I have a million Govrom, Sarvos, and Phanost heads that need bodies ASAP. Thanks and good luck!

Any permanent Traveler would be great. With all the custom heads and bits being made by people, the loss of the founders as been felt pretty hard. I often find myself in need of thighs and arms somehow.

  12. Dear god yes! Unlimited clear (or just standard, whatever) Glyoses year round? this sounds like the best thing that could possibly happen!

  13. Brilliant collection.
That solid gray Gavan looks awesome!

Speaking of awesome, I love the idea of the original Pheyden and other main characters to be permanently available. It would give the customizers acces to basic parts even between drops and it would open the door to even more people to join in on the fun.

    Really looking forward to it.

  14. Legions of Power was an obsession of mine. I had a whole base going in my room. I broke it somehow, screamed something like, "It was all for nothing!" and threw it all down the stairs.

  15. Black and colorless clear Travelers would be incredible to have year-round, along with matching Glyans, Gendrones, and power-ups. At the same time, an always-around Pheyden would get the character and the fiction into more hands. Tough call!

Maybe if there was a starter pack, with a couple fully-painted characters, a comic, and a couple build-ready figures for ~$25? Along with the Buildstation 2.0, that is. Probably too much to produce, but a man can dream...

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think i'd be okay with story characters always in stock, and maybe matching phase sets..

    ReplyDelete
  17. Would be overjoyed to see a always in stock selection. Champing at the bit for the next drop. And oh boy, that shelf you have there is a utter paradise.

  18. Looks like I'm in the minority maybe, but I'd love to see standard colors of standard characters always in stock. It is a great starting point for new (or even old) customers. It's kinda like honoring the roots of this line. I love the standards. Plus, you can paint them over just the same.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Standard fellas available at all times would be great as it seems each new drop brings with it new fans. And the way to keep new fans is to make them feel welcomed. And nothing says "Welcome to the fold" like being able to nab a Standard figures. Makes one feel "in" and not left out.

  20. A Standard Pheyden is something I've always wanted, but I do like the Buildstation idea.

My suggestions would be standard Pheyden, Exellis, Sarvos, and Argen, while having an assortment of Buildstation pieces. The Buildstation would of course include Axis Joints, Phase Sets, and Hubs, while maybe also havign some of the iconic or build-ready characters like Travelers or Buildmen. It'd be cool to be able to buy a solid-colour, no-details Echo Morph set for ultimate traveler customization!

As for colours, I would recommend the standard colours for Pheyden, etc. with sometimes mixing them for limited times (Dark Pheyden, Reverse Exellis, etc.). Meanwhile, the Buildstation could cycle through colours. It could be white for a while, then black, then clear, GITD, clear smoke, red, blue, whatever suits your fancy! It's reasonable that not all colours could be available at once, but I think a regular cycle (one colour every one or two months, for example), would be a convienent way to go.

For example, if someone really wanted some GITD pieces, they just have to wait for the cycle to come around. By looking at the schedule, they could learn "oh, the Buildstation will be GITD in two months" or something if it's clearly-scheduled and regular. Maybe popular colours (like clear) would be dispersed throughout the year, maybe January, May, and October are all "Clear Months" (for example).

    1. To follow up on that, we don't need Buildtsation runs of EVERYTHING. As cool as it'd be to have everything available in the same colours at all times, I think travelers and buildmen are the #1 choice besides the "accessories" sets.

Though I'm always up for new Hi-Phaseons!

  21. As someone who was sad I couldn't get Pheyden right from the get-go, I wholeheartedly support the idea of the standard Pheyden, etc. The little traveler is a damn charming design, and everyone should have a crack at him. It also promotes customizing, for some people like myself who could never justify painting over the one version of a character I have.

  22. First off: wow, that's one heck of a collection! (Starriors, even? Five-year-old me is jealous!) There are some true greats amidst that shelf, and so it doesn't surprise me at all to hear that Glyos is tested among it all . . . where it rightfully belongs.

As for the "Buildstation" idea: though I'd love to see another run on Standards, having all the sculpts be available in some unified color might make things easier for builders and "light" customizers. We've seen a lot of black at this point, though, and we just had a run featuring grey and white, so maybe it can open up with clear colorless or even the old Buildstation blue and red?

However, that's not to say new Standards wouldn't also be interesting to see. (Would the new Standard Sarvos receive "face paint" or go without? What would be "standard" for the Glyan and the Phaseon?) It's just that, with the line moving in the direction it is, it'd be weird to have figures without the build packs in the same colorways as the Standard schemes. Unless that was part of the plan somehow . . . in which case, wow, that'd be crazy!

In short: a Standard wave, maybe annually, would be great to include everyone, and maybe it could even be a sort of "hey, the anniversary is coming up, so let's see the guys that started it all again!" thing, but unless accessory packs are involved, maybe we can stick to a solid or clear colorway for the Buildstation, yeah?

    1. It's mostly because I'm too poor to afford a bunch of cool stuff each round, but personally I like just having the basics. Normal travelers (though colour-swapped to look better for my tastes) are the bulk of my stuff, along with Hi-Phaseons. I do have a single traveler bulked out with phase sets and axis joints, but Rynevo is a special case being my first traveler.

What I'm getting at is why can't we just appreciate the traveler/Buildman moulds as they are? You don't have to be so up in arms for building that you have to decree that it's a waste of plastic to not be able to build. :(

  23. i don't feel either one is objectively better than the other but i can speak personally. i would prefer having standard versions of characters continuously in stock more then a well stocked build station. don't get me wrong if we could have both that would be my first choice. when i playing through the passcode all i wanted was standard figures of all the characters. to me a figure is 1000x more interesting when there is a story behind it. even after my year and a half of collecting i still don't own a standard pheyden or argen and i would jump on those in the store if i could. i also believe new fans would be more inclined to pick up standard figures of characters if they, like me, were starving for an og pheyden and argen after finishing the passcode. i think it boils down to whether someone cares more about builds or characters to determine which they would prefer to have in stock. and i'm willing to bet a majority of us in the community would love both.
the big con i could see of having standard figures only opposed to a build station is that once someone purchases a standard figure that's usually good enough. one pheyden would be enough for me, i would just display it and look at it and love it, but for a builder. give him 10, 20, 30 of the same figure and that would still be ok because his objective is to build or customize. i eagerly await the april drop! thank you doughty crew for everything.

  24. This choice seems to ask "Are you a builder or collector?" I am both. I am also new to collecting Glyos. As a toy collector I want the ability to own one of everything you have ever made. As a builder I want the ability to amass a huge pile of parts in just a few colors so that what I build will look cohesive when done. I understand the need to keep the collectible nature of the line intact, and for that reason I propose a color set be given the "unlimited" designation. Instead of reproducing the long out of print characters in any previous colors, produce them all in one color set. In this way new collectors will have access to them, older collectors will be able to buy old favorites in a new color, and customize-rs will paint them no mater what color they are. I am as stated before a builder. I have spent huge sums of money on Lego over the years. Though I have Lego in many different colors, I do concentrate on a few colors as build colors. I think having all the product you have ever made available all the time, in black, white, and clear would be amazing. I include the clear both for the builders and the customize-rs. This is my dream for your store.

  25. The only reason I took the jump and got in on Glyos is because of standard Pheyden and Excellis being available in the Founders. My vote is 100% behind standard figures being in stock at all times. Please do this.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I would love to see Standard Pheyden around again! (And/or any of the Standards make a comeback; Sarvos, Argen, a new Standard Govie, etc) I think every Glyos fan would want (at least) one if they were available, and it would be great for new fans to be able to get the iconic character(s) from the store. When I was a kid, I didn't have to get a Luke first, but I had to get one eventually, I just couldn't have great Star Wars adventures without a Luke in my group; it's much the same with Pheyden and Glyos.

    1. ...And sooo many memories in that collection. I used to love those figures with the hexagons in their backs, can't remember what they were from, I used them with my SW figures. And the red bug-eyed furry guy!?! Never knew what he was, but he and his rubber robot buddy used to go to elementary school with me in my pocket. :)
Great shelf to stare at and come up with adventures!

  27. I vote for all Black + Clears. Standards are cool but i prefer colorless:)

  28. I would LOVe to be able to buy some standard Pheydens at all times!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I want to have my cake and eat it too!

I would love to have the standards available, as others have said, they make up the core of the Glyos universe and as basic starters it really makes a lot of sense. When a lot of us new guys have jumped in over the last couple of years, it's like jumping into Star Wars while they're doing an extended universe line of figures but not being able to experience the originals. That being said, I'm always about moderation, so I don't expect anything too crazy!

As far as black and clears for building, I would really like to see that too! I love building new characters in the Glyos universe and these would be very welcome, and let's face it, we can never have enough extra Traveler arms and legs!

  30. my feelings are mixed. I am new to Glyos and while i'd like to have all the founders for collection purposes I think i'd rather have a larger pool of customizable parts around at all times. There are some figures I have where I just keep them intact and on display because I like their cohesive look how it is, but these figures aren't played with nearly as much.

where glyos really shines to me is when I create a mashup character of my own that I grow really attached to, and create his/her own backstory for.
those are the figures that spend the most time in my hands, in my pocket, everywhere I go.
the problem is I am not confident enough in my painting/dying/airbrushing skills to be able to afford to take gambles on a bunch of clears/solid colors off the second hand market yet. So for me it would be nice to have access to some DIY parts without breaking the bank.

but as some others have said I'd love it if their was like a cycle of colorways in the buildstation, and then a couple founders around at all times as well.

maybe there could be some cool astrology focus to it to where at certain times of the lunar year Pheyden and Argen are in town, and at other times Sarvos and Exellis show up.

PS. a DIY Rig/armodoc would be rad too in the buildstation..
and there has gotta be Glyans!

  31. I'd love to see standard colorways in stock at all times. Y'gotta have a standard Pheyden available for all the newcomers. Seeing black or clear colorless figures in stock would be very helpful too.

  32. Logging in a little late, here (work has been insane!), I haven't even read all the other comments. But:
I'm terribly excited by the return of a constantly-stocked store.
The problem I have with a standard character offering is that we also need build sets to match. So a specific color might be the way to go, with build sets to match.
As for what color, I vote -- nay, demand! -- the dark grey we saw in the last release as a universal build color.

    ReplyDelete
  33. In light of the update, Matt: clear colorless all the way for the Buildstation! We've gotten a lot of black over the years, but not nearly so much clear, I think. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Clear colorless and black ago-go!
maybe add GITD Down the line?

    ReplyDelete
  35. This is AWESOME news!

I'd vote for clear for one reason: you can make clear plastic black, but you can't make black plastic clear. Both colors are great complimentary colors to any release, but clear has the added benefit of being modified to any shade plus any shade of see through.

  36. Last pic - the guy deco'd like a motorcycle cop - I had him but in all white suit with blue helmet - kind of a loose Evel Knievel colourway - loved that figure - all about the neck articulation ! Kind of a Steve McQueen vibe - must see if I can find it !!

  37. Black over clear!
Agent Nemica could be a cool addition to the permanent residents of the store :)

  38. Awesome shelves Matt, I think I saw those when Beth & I visited you back in December of '11.

    As for the questions...

-I'd like to see a few standard characters available in the store year round, especially Standard Pheyden. He's just a classic at this point.

-YES, for the love of all things plastic we need a Buildstation again. I rely on those for my custom figures and not being able to get access to them regularly severely inhibits my ability to make new releases. As for what colors in the buildstation? Black is always a good neutral color, so maybe another neutral color to accompany it? White is always a good choice, or gray. Clear is good too, but the clear parts always strike me as accents to solid colors. If you're making clear characters, then they work fine so maybe clear would be a good option also. Tough to say. :-/

Keep up the good work Matt & can't wait for your new pieces. :-D

  39. I'd really enjoy seeing some standard figures consistently available as I am new to the fandom, and would love a chance to enjoy them. Though, cycling the offered colors seems best. They're so popular for those with established collections and build-mania.

I suggest rotating color schemes, including standards, for ultimate fun!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Clear or white!! Yes please!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. A standard Govurom would be nice in the Standards collection. Besides that a return to Build station black would be great!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Blue grey would be rad. Since i am new to these guys and I am not a customizer, I want more basic colored troops.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm also onboard for Standard figures of as many unique characters as possible (Pheyden, Sarvos, Govurom, Phanost, Exellis, Gobon, etc.) being available year-round.

Buildstation figures/parts would be great, too. Black, white and grey are great colors to start with, maybe going into solid colors later on?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Since you recently had the Hades Force wave, I would think Clear Colourless is a good choice. Clear hasn't been used in a while, so it could be neat for the newer folk.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I would like to second (or third) the idea Shockpulse put forth -- of rotating the color available in the Buildstation. It wouldn't have to be a set schedule, when you run out white pieces, the next order would grey, etc. This way you would cycle through the basic five colors. Customizers would know that a specific color they need will eventually be back in stock, just gotta be patient.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Great question, as I think your popularity is starting to outgrow your original business model. :) As someone with tons of heads/torsos from way back, I'd love a selection of axis joints and hub sets in various colors, not just black. Maybe some reds again or colors we don't see that often, like blues or yellows. As for a "Standard" figure, I think it'd be cool if there was a "mascot" figure(s) either in an official "Onell" color scheme or with a special tampo print, be it a Traveller, a crayboth, or Glyan in stock at all times as a sample for new collectors. (Would still love and Apokalypse Crayboth)
