Axis Heavy Armor

Another big influence on me has been Masamune Shirow, who is best recognized as the man behind Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell.

I first saw his work back in the 1980's (around '85) when I discovered a bootleg copy of the animation Black Magic. The designs were very unique, with an organic quality to the mechanical style that looked unlike anything I had ever seen before. When I eventually saw the manga for Appleseed my brain exploded and I've never looked at a mech the same way since.

This build is a tribute to Masamune Shirow's incredible worlds, without which Glyos would have a lot less round stuff to play with.

  1. Love the colour-scheme on the white/greey* Pheyden.

    * Not sure if it's green or grey...

  2. How many axis joints were used? I haven't bought any yet, but I might buy enough for this (unless it's some crazy amount :P )! This configuration is absolutely awesome!

  4. Not too crazy about the lack of hands on the heavy armor but aside from that it's looks really badass.

  7. I need to replicate these... Time to spend a couple hours staring at the computer with parts in my lap...

  8. You did Masamune Shirow justice, my friend. The heavy armor was instantly recognizable as fitting his general aesthetic, and personally, the rounded arms and torso construction are what make it for me and the look.

I admit that the "SEND" reference is lost on me, but only because I'm rusty. This is really great stuff, Matt. Now I wonder if building a Tachikoma would be feasible...

  9. Shirow's designs were always amazing. Isn't he a professor of engineering at a university? In any case, this is beautiful work! Makes me wanna order a couple of those joints now...

  13. That top build is one of your top 3 builds to me of all time. It's awesome Matt. I would imagine it's a fingertip destroyer?

  14. @Josh: It's what I'm here for!

Also, Matt: when are we ever going to see a Glyos Idea Book, like Lego used to publish every now-and-again?

  15. Freakin' amazing build Matt. I may have to buy a bunch of axis joint sets just to build a suit or two like this. I just love the rounded edges and the bulk to it.
