Zoanoid Inspired Pheyaos Customs

When I was working on the Pheyaos customs a few received Zoanoid/Guyver inspired paint jobs.

Guyver's creator,Yoshiki Takaya, has created so many incredible and iconic designs that they seem to creep into everything I do -since all the way back to 1985! I can't believe Guyver is that old!

My childhood bedroom used to have xeroxed pages of Guyver taped to the walls that I would copy from old Japanese magazines. Guyver, Fist of the North Star, Grey, and Dragon Ball Z drove me crazy back in the 80's.

Oh yeah, I also loved Baoh!

  3. I keep forgetting to ask this, was Guyver the source for the Standard Pheyden colorway?

  4. Steve Wang was the only saving grace of that first live action Guyver movie!

The original Pheyden colorway was based on a few things, the main ones being one of my favorite shirts as a kid and also a toy dolphin I loved the color of. Guyver definitely played a part though.

I've always gravitated towards more neutral shades of color.

Do you guys remember the old Ocean Pacific brand of clothing? I liked the colors of the late 80's OP stuff as well as that other old surf clothing line called Hobie.

Maybe I shouldn't admit these kinds of things...

  6. Oh man, xeroxing pictures. I remember spending time at the public library making copies of pages from the Robotech art books. Those were the days; your whole perception of a series- accurate or not- was based on the fragments of toys and artwork that you could scrape together and your imagination had to fill in the rest.

Each CC Pheyaos looks better than the last. It's hard to watch, haha.

  7. Oh Yeah !!! I haven't heard "Zoanoid" in like forever. And the complete collection is coming out soon, or re-released ???
I'm just introducing DBZ to my boy, just another daddy/son bonding thang, and he gets the "orange bricks" while daddy has the Dragon Boxes :P We already watch Studio Ghibli's Miyazaki masterpieces on a regular basis so he will know proper animation as a kid !!!

  8. O_O I love these two colorways, I can't explain why I do but I do. Fantastic work Matt. Damnit, now I have to buy one of these guys LoL. I get a Starriors vibe off of the tan/black one (Crank from the Protectors), the other one just reminds me of the gold buildman you did recently- whoa ho, waitaminute- was that buildman colorway inspired by this?

  9. Gah! This just reminds me that no one seems to be doing scanlations of this manga anymore.

  11. It's funny to hear that you were influenced by Grey...I still have the graphic novels from back in the day, but I've never met anyone else who read them. :)

Oh yeah and I wore tons of OP and Hobie too as a teenager...I think I wanted to be a surfer too, but that never happened. Heh. Did you have 1 of those Baja sweaters anyone? You know those are starting to come back! *shiver*
