The Chicago Whirlwind

The trip out to C2E2 was a lot of fun, and it was great to spend some time meeting up with friends, both old and new. The combination of going to C2E2 and then attending the Chicago Toy Show in Kane County made for a wicked double header of plastic insanity! In all my years of collecting and checking out shows, I've never seen anything quite like the Chicago Toy Show. If you ever get the chance to go, do not hesitate.

Above are a few of the spoils from the breakneck table exploration. Make sure to check out Phil Reed's great Battlegrip post about the classic LJN Official AD&D toy line for multiple resources on one of the best series from the early 1980's!

Enormous thanks once again to all of the Chicago crew for their true hospitality, it really made the short time in the Windy City something to remember.

  1. Awesome haul. Nice to see Mickey made the short list.. Sad to have missed this tremendous opportunity to meet and greet so many "Greats of Glyos" including the main man himself. Someday perhaps.

  3. He looks to be a "Bullywug of the Bog" from LJN's original run of AD&D...1980's? Bring a nostalgic tear to my eye...simpler times. Nice find Matt!

    1. Charles is right on! This solid PVC frog warrior was offered in a two pack way back in 1982-1983. LJN spared no expense with their Official Advanced Dungeons & Dragons toy line, covering a variety of action figure styles. My favorite part of the LJN series was the scale, which allowed for some awesome battle scenes! Their attention to scale still serves as a huge influence on how we approach the character sizes in Glyos.

Phil Reed wrote an excellent AD&D resource post over at Battlegrip:

    2. Nice haul Matt! In my early days of toy collecting stumbled across LJN's AD&D toyline and it is totally a great under appreciated line. In the mid-1990's my friends got me into Role-Playing Games so I had even more fun reading about all the different creatures and gettin the toys. I nabbed a Dragonne beast in the box off of EBay and the art on the packaging is a work of beauty. Over the years I also grabbed 3 of the bendy monsters still sealed on the cardbacks, the sculpting for this line was a weird mix of good and slap-dash, but totally fun regardless.

Nice Auger find too Matt! Always fascinates me how Auger's suit looks sooooo organic then robotic. Another great toyline.

    3. Hey Chris! I imagine that your toy archive is still packed with the good stuff. Your eye for quality never fails.

It's been a bit since I've seen an Auger that wasn't somehow either busted, missing parts or scuffed to oblivion. What a killer line the Inhumanoids was. The Kane County show had a number of decent finds from the series, including a few of the larger horrors.

  4. Thanks so much for joining us, man! This weekend was such a great time and it was great to get a chance to chat, a bit. Glad you got some sweet scores at Kane County.
Interesting tidbit- While LJN did the D&D action figures, the pvcs and the bendies were actually done by TSR, themselves. It's pretty rad how they made them compatible like that. I've still got to track down an Umber Hulk with a decent set of intact mandibles.

    1. That's right, Ben! Even though they didn't have that LJN stamp on their bodies, TSR did sneak that LJN logo on the old packages, albeit in a slightly misleading way. Those sneaky devils still got me hooked! I can remember getting the Minotaur at Kay Bee Toys in the Burlington Mall as a kid and losing my mind.

Speaking of mandibles, Umber Hulk would make a pretty good subject for a Kabuto Mushi homage...

Thanks for having us out in Chicago, Ben!
