The Old Stuff

While we process the orders from the launch, we wanted to dust off a batch of old school stuff for you guys to check out. Some of you may even have one of these original urethane figures from years ago.

For the next week we'll be posting shots from the Rechlen and Aves photo book and even a couple of really crusty images from the first days of Onell operations. I personally have been wanting to make the original 2" size (actually just under that) of Rechlen, Aves and other Glyans for quite a few years, but I'm not 100% confident that they should come out at that smaller scale. In the original stories Pheyden and the Travelers were represented as bigger dudes that could shift their size when they needed to (still the case). So technically the 2" scale would still be accurate. Jesse and I imagine piles of Old War soldiers and Gear's Edge characters filling our pockets, ready to tackle any adventure in an instant. They would still be totally interchangeable with all the modern figures, just half the size. Like an old Air Raider, Starcom or Battle Beast (Marc's favorite) vibe. Let us know what you think, and maybe it will push us over the edge to actually cut steel for these extra little dudes.

  1. Hells YES bro!

    I LOVE those old guys!

And having them fully Glyos compatible? So we could create vehicles and mecha for them.

Imagine a Gobon based power armor for the 2" figures!!!

    It's all made of WIN!

  3. That brings back fond memories of my single Starcom figure. I would love to have 2" guys like Rechlen and Aves added to the line. The new scale with Glyos compatibility would open up all kinds of possibilities.

  4. I would buy the hell out of those. You're talkin' Starcom, maybe we can have magnets?

  7. Yes. I think everyone would love to have a couple (or more) of these guys. I know I would. A Rechlen and Aves drop would be amazing.

  8. Alright, Marc just stepped up a notch in my book. Battle Beasts are my all time favorite line (and Glyos of course). and I was big into Starcom as a little guy too. It all sounds like win to me. Besides, you know we will support you in any direction you may take.

  11. Just out of curiosity, have you ever thought of resculpting these guys in the glyos scale? Maybe not to sell but more for an update to the characters. The larger scale only means more detail. Plus, you can kinda see how your skills may have progressed over time. Kinda a fun little side adventure in sculpting.

  12. I'm all for the 2" figures!! I would love to add Rechlan, Aves, maybe some old style Buildmen, and even a Glip would be cool! I love small figures for some reason. Still have some of the old Air Raiders.....used to have Starcom figs too. I like that they had mini visors that had articulation.

  13. Yes yes yes! Some of my favorite figures as a kid were the DinoRiders riders and MASK pilots...just so much design in such little figures. Let's see these guys produced stat!

  14. Oh yes, small figs would be awesome, and they wouldn't bulge out my pockets as much. Who am I kidding, I'd buy so many I'd look like a pack rat.

  15. You got my vote for making 'em Matt! I had Air Raiders and Starcom toys (what am I talking about- I STILL have them LoL) as a kid and even though articulation is limited at that scale, it is not a negative thing. The fact that you were about to get so much detail into Rechlen's head and his head is maybe about the size of a pea, is a true testament to your skills as a sculptor. I'm always amazed when I see these figures that they're as small as they are. Some of my customs would be like giants to Rechlen and Aves. O_O

  16. Yes please. I've been wanting them since I got the Rechlen & Aves book

  17. Yes! Keep them small...I've been wanting them since I first got the photo comic...and don't forget the gliptoran!

  18. I'll take a small of everything please! Those look great. We need those, listen to me "we need those" LOL!

  19. That would be awesome... and they'd look real good being surrounded by the crayboth!

  20. Out of curiosity, how would the smaller scale figures work interchangeably with the larger Glyos figures we've seen so far? I remember seeing plans for a Blue Eye figure that used the same joint system, but how would the difference in scale affect the aesthetic of combined pieces?

Also, in either scale, it'd be nice to see some of these legendary characters appear in Glyos. I lean toward the 3" line, just as Mindless said, for the sake of increased detail, but having a "Glyos Mini" line that not only encompassed these older characters, but smaller version of Pheyden, Sarvos, and Callgrim would be a nice and unique way of branching-out.

  21. Thanks for the feedback! It's great to hear all your collective thoughts on this subject.
As far as the aesthetics, this expansion would just add some more character specific parts to the range. The pieces would be a little smaller, but would still use the same universal fit function. For instance, Rechlen would have functions at his hips, waist, shoulders, middle back and neck. He would probably come packed with some extra backpacks, heads and some hand held items. Combined with a Buildman you could make some armored suits, vehicles, cyborgs and those kinds of things. Creating some smaller versions of the Travelers and Callgrim would also be on deck. It could be an easier way to offer more characters as well and fits right in with the expanding story lines.

  22. Yes, we will buy them for sure. Any new figures would be great. What can we do to help make it happen?

  23. Would using something like www.kickstarter.com help? Maybe to raise the initial cost of tooling?

With Onell's track record, I'd have no problem at all pledging via Kickstarter and it would give Matt and co a infusion of cash to get started without any risk...

And Custom Corps figures and such would make excellent incentives for various pledge levels!

    Just an idea!

  24. smaller versions of Travelers got me to thinking, are there any immature/larval stages of any of them? i know that say, Phanost has an origin story that has been made public, but some of the other organic looking Travelers *could* have developed from smaller forms.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think it's out of question to question if those guys should be produced! TWERP! I might vouch for a NO - don't make them...

    HA! KDDNG!

This kickstarter idea is not so far off - nice!

  26. monetarily, i see the point of smaller figures. especially if that is how this company started. i'm a stickler for scale tho. i would like to eventually see these guys in "Glyos" scale. Maybe not released but i'd like to see an updated take on these characters at a slightly larger scale. think of how detailed these could get at a larger scale. and i echo the idea of kick starter. i want to see this company succeed and continue putting out this crack we all love. whatever you do, know i and others will always be here to support you.

  27. oh and its almost christmas. dont forget to take care of your family's presents first. family always first. then us (extended family). i dont know about the others but i dont mind waiting for my box of gly-crack.

  28. go for it matt you know the voodookid would love it!

  29. So if they're going to be two inches how much detail could we expect to see from production copies and what about paint apps? I'd buy them in a heartbeat but I have to say I'm more of a fan of the bigger scale that the travelers are at now.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I would love to finally get some of these 2" scale figures. Do it up Matt, please.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The details would look like the stuff in the photos. I actually refined the sculpts a bit a few years ago because we almost pulled the trigger back then (I still have the masters). Even though they are smaller, they are not crazy tiny. The paint apps would be tight, as the same team would be making them that does all our stuff right now- as well as the new painted OSM. The apps would be a bit more complex, but most of the parts would be shot in the basic colors of the characters. If we do this, I have a few ideas about how to maximize the mold so that we can get a kind of Standard "human" Glyan as well. Something that we could all customize like crazy. Ultimately, I would like to get some of the female characters from Rechlen and Aves produced if things did OK.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That would be awesome, Matt. A little diversity never hurts.

How would the smaller size affect durability? I understand that these might not exactly be "pocket" figures, but would they be considered fragile due to the smaller, and what appears to be thinner, parts?

    ReplyDelete
  33. They would be just as tough. We have some fairly thin parts already in production -like the Buildman skinny left arm and the Traveler's left open fingers-so the PVC can take the beating. These would absolutely be "pocket" toys. The key is the durometer of the PVC. If the plastic is just soft enough, then it will not snap. Just don't try to take them apart in freezing weather, that is the Kryptonite of PVC.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You know my answer - we have to have these characters.

If they are still supposed to be smaller than Pheyden and the rest in the "production version" of the Glyos Universe, then do so. I have been looking at the pics in those books for so long that I actually do want them to be the same size as shown, just in PVC.

  35. If I had these figures, I'd probably use them to make smaller characters then I'm currently doing. I need to tighten up some of my sculpting anyway, so to make smaller heads to fit on these bodies would be helping towards that. I dig the idea of having a line in this smaller scale, haven't seen that in a while and add in glyos compatibility = awesomesauce.

  36. the 2" limited articulation of the originals would be awesome. I love those older figures looks just the way they are! if you rerelease these guys I will defintiely be one of the first in line. lvoe them so much!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am pretty new to Glyos in general but I love everything that has been put in front of me. These are no different! I would adore to add these little guys to my collection. I personally feel like the smaller scale is the way to go, it again adds all the more possibility to the line in general! So if/when they get made I'll be inline with the rest of these fine folks to buy em up!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I only just started checking out glyos too and I have to say these tiny guys look awesome. You really need to make pvc versions of them happen!

    ReplyDelete
  39. The scale of these guys reminds me of Dino Riders, which was my favorite toy line as a kid. I also really love these sculpts. I'd purchase these in half a heartbeat. Also, adding a smaller scale "human" figure would make it even easier to make vehicles and mech suits and things from the larger existing Glyos stuff. It's win all around!
