Delphi Concepts

The Delphi were developed in a slightly different way than most of the characters in Glyos, in that their definitive look was first captured when I sculpted, not sketched one. It was also the very first time I ever tried Aves Epoxy (you know I like that name).

One night I was hanging out at Jesse's house after a day at the shop and I saw that he had some new material to mess around with. Before I could ask about what it was, he just reached over and put a lump (2 lumps actually) in front of me. A few hours later the first sculpted Delphi head came into being. I had done a few sketches of an ancient Traveler predecessor before, but when I started using the Aves Epoxy everything came into focus. It's funny to note that in general I'm a reductive sculptor, but every so often things go in reverse. The birth of the Delphi was one of those times.

The sketches above are from later in the growth of the design, playing around with a "female" version as well as some different armored head concepts.

I could post conceptual work until the cows come home, but I don't want to bore you guys too much longer. There are a couple more things that might be of interest though, King Crayboth possibly being one of them.

Maybe tomorrow?

  1. Very sleek design up top, my friend. I've been wondering: do the Delphi have beaks up front, or is that part of the crest? Do they even have mouths? It'd be cool to see, with the Villser, Delphi, and the rest, how they "work," so-to-speak. Alien physiology is just such a fascinating idea to explore, to try and understand what an organism could be; there was even a book I had as a kid that went into a lot of detail about it. (The same artist, I believe, went on to have a Discovery Channel special or something all about the idea). Maybe we could have something just for exploring the denizens of the Glyos System someday?

    2. No, actually, though he did provide some illustrations for it. It was through Scholastic . . . this is gonna bug me for a while.

  2. Seriously Matt, I'll take concept art every day. I know that for myself I take inspiration and cues from all of it.

I love how dark these Delphi come across; I could easily see them as abductors.

  5. Okay, first and foremost, this is my absolutely most anticipated figure of 2013. I canNOT wait to hold one of these. I will be going all completist on these. These guys (and gals) surpass my love for even the Govurom. I just hope you realize these may rival the Armorvor in popularity. Order big out the gate. If not, I'll buy of the remainder.

  6. Somehow the Delphi seem extra creepy without their bulky armor. Those sunken black eyes. Nothing escapes them.

  7. And can you imagine those membranous sacs on the sides of their heads always slightly expanding and retracting? When it retracts, they expose more if a veiny, brain-like structure underneath?

PFFFFFT! You silly goon! We've talked before about our shared love of "behind the scenes" books and documentaries, so you know good and well that there is nothing cooler than seeing the development of stuff like this. So keep posting 'em! We'll keep gobbling them up!
